Meet Mats Torwmo, owner and ”daily leader” at the Kayakcenter in Grebbestad.
The town of Grebbestad is situated 140 km north of Gothenburg, on the
coast of course.
How it all started:
In the beginning, Mats had some ideas about renting out boats to people who wanted to explore the westcoast waters but was persuided to buy a fleet of kayaks instead. So he got a hold of 8 kayaks and soon the first kayak center in Grebbestad opened.
Mats main idea was to rent out kayaks to clients but just two weeks after he opened his business, people started to wonder if he also was selling these wonderful vessels and suddenly he found him self not just doing rentals, but also selling kayaks and paddle equipment.
In 2002, after 2 months of building a new kayak centre (and 12 kilos less) Mats moved into his new premises that is more or less built on the water. The jetty in front of the kayak shop is a great spot for getting ready for a day trip or a long expedition, to enjoy the paddling atmosphere and eat an ice cream in the sun.
Who can paddle a kayak?
Almost anyone. We care for making sure that you get the right kayak and the equipment that is suitable for you.
Top 3 paddle destinations for Mats:
1. The archipelago of Fjällbacka and Grebbestad
Just outside the doorstep of Mats kayak center, you’ll find this beautiful part of the west coast. It’s full of lovely islands that are very easy to access since we don’t have any tidal movements or strong tides. Find your favourite beach, jump a shore, go for a swim and enjoy the sun.
2. The Koster Islands.
Get lost among the hundreds of islands and islets around Koster. This is a perfect place for paddlers, since the water is so shallow at places and is therefor only suitable for kayaks. Paddle through small passages, curl around rocks and have a break on the lovely island Ramsökalven.
3. Dalsland waterways/ Halden / the Idefjord
If you want to paddle from ”drinking water, to fresh water, to salt water” this trip on the border of Sweden and Norway will give you a great and different experience. Surrounded by trees and lush vegetation you travel from the inland towards the sea and you move slowly in your kayaks through different kinds of vegetation and landscapes.
And lastly, what kind of transportation do you prefer Mats?
Kayak of course, but I also enjoy taking out the motorbike I have once in a while.
