Local of the week: Stockholm

Elena Smon Wolay, 25, lives in Nacka, Stockholm. She’s the well known Nightclub queen/boss at Marie Laveau together with the brilliant nightclub king Kornél Kovács!

– Yeah…

What dominates at the club scene in Stockholm this year?

– Live Fridays at Marie Laveau and Jazz är farligt (Jazz is dangerous) at Strand every Wednesday.

Ah, okey! I must say I love your style, you have one of the coolest hairdos I’ve seen! How do you get it like that?

– Thanks! It’s simply just natural. I’ve been relaxing my hair since I was six years old though and grew my natural hair out again just recently, so since I was six I wanted too look boring to get accepted… The damage? Don’t even go there… It’s a shame what kind of beauty ideal the society forced me into at such an early stage in life.

– For you stupid guys out there that don’t get the above: I’d rather fuck Betty Davis than Francois Hardy so that’s why I simply grew it out.

Got that. So, where do you get your style from? Where do you buy your clothes?

– Honestly I hardly ever buy clothes but when I do I go to Lisa Larsson, Old Touch, Ruby’s, An ideal life for living, 118 Läder… The jacket and sun glasses are both from Lisa Larsson.

My style is a mix of my music references: Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Fläsket Brinner, Betty Davis, Music Machine, Peter Brötzmann… But I do have some favorite style icons that represent a time when the musicians I love were at their best: Marsha Hunt and Chaka Khan, before the crack and when she worked with Rufus.
